Cooking in the California kitchens
You are driving your California along a beautiful coastal road as the sun sets. However, there is not a restaurant any where in sight. Luckily, depending on your California model, your van is equipped with different kitchen modules and features. And you can use all this to whip up delicious dinners night after night. It’s possible! We’ll tell you how.
Version one:
A fully-equipped kitchen
A gas stove with two rings: your cooking knows no bounds in the Grand California, California 6.1 Ocean/Coast and the new California. In the mood for a tasty sweet potato stew? No problem. A medium-rare fillet steak. Sure. Whatever you fancy, you’ll feel like you’re in a Michelin-starred kitchen. We admit there might be one small difference: a Michelin-starred kitchen is always covered in tiles and stainless steel. In the California, on the other hand, you can enjoy an Alpine outlook as you cook. Or a sunset over the Atlantic. Or the Northern lights.
Unfortunately, you can’t avoid the washing-up. But the California is equipped with some smart solutions for this, too. Like the deeply recessed sink, for instance, which is connected directly to the water mains. Almost any pan will fit inside. Particularly because you can move the tap for added flexibility. Another practical feature? The worktop. Here you can chop your veg with meticulous accuracy that would be fitting for any Michelin-starred kitchen – after all, the kitchen units and storage areas are all cleverly positioned. As a result, you have plenty of space and everything close to hand. What does that mean exactly? Getting a spice from the cupboard to add to your meal takes a fraction of a second. As a pro cook, you can confidently say where you should store your freshly made pesto. Easy! In your built-in cooling compressor. By the way, here’s a small tip: in the Grand California, you even have a built-in fridge-freezer – ice, ice baby!
Version two:
The pull-out kitchen
Intricate meals aren’t your thing? Then you’ll find that the smaller version of our fully equipped kitchenette has everything you need. We call it our “pull-out kitchen module”. That’s German engineering speak for a kitchenette that you can pull out of the back of your vehicle.
This version is available as an option in the Caddy California, California 6.1 Beach and also in the new California Beach. The great thing about this option is that, instead of having a kitchen inside the vehicle, you get to cook outdoors or in the shelter of the boot lid. And this means more space for you and your friends inside the vehicle.
The ability to prepare simple, practical and small, quick meals – that’s what this mini kitchen is all about. The mini kitchen is made up of two pull-out areas: the first one is at the top and consists of a gas stove and a sturdy worktop. And you can store all your cooking utensils, like pans, saucepans and cutlery, in the second pull-out area at the bottom. Extra awesome: the railing system clicks in place. This stops things from flying around or hitting you accidentally. To sum things up: your freshly fried egg doesn’t have to travel far from the pan to your plate. And the same goes for your coffee. Or anything else you need to make or cook for that matter.
Have all your friends and family enjoyed their meals? Then it’s time for the washing up. The sink has a large fresh water tank, so there is nothing to delay the washing-up process. Then you can simply stow the sink back into the module.
Summer, sunshine and al fresco cooking
Al fresco cooking – now possible. With the new California. That’s because you can now access the vehicle interior from the outside. Pull open the second sliding door and you can use the fridge, folding outdoor table and 230 V external socket from outside the vehicle. And why not pull out the awning for some lovely shade. Chop your veggies. Bring your induction plate out. Enjoy the al fresco cooking experience. The socket is integrated directly into the kitchen module for easy access. Or perhaps you’d prefer a little BBQ using your tabletop grill plate. Whatever you fancy, the freedom is yours. Get your travel companions involved in the cooking. Give them a job to do and things won’t just go quicker, they’ll be more fun, too.
Dinner time:
Everything in the right place
When you’re cooking, you want to be cooking – not hunting for ingredients and equipment. That’s why the California makes smart use of its storage space. There is the perfect place for every saucepan, every pan and everything else you’ve bought along. So, you don’t need to spend lots of time and effort looking for things. Saucepans, pans and crockery disappear into drawers. Spices and other smaller items are stowed in handy cupboards on the wall. This means that everything is neat, tidy and within easy reach – even if you a few lumps and bumps along the road. The drawers are designed not to rattle or spring open while you’re moving, keeping everything in its place. In terms of space, you might find yourself looking for extra storage for supplies that you don’t need all the time. Simply take a peek under the seat benches, where you’ll find plenty of space for more drawers.
Inside or outside:
A relaxed atmosphere for dinner
Is dinner ready? Then make yourself comfy! It doesn’t take long to set the inside table – after all, everything is stowed away in the kitchen area. So, this option is ideal, particularly if it is raining outside or the weather is not very nice.
Or are you more of a sun worshipper? Then you might prefer to opt for outdoor dining. The California comes with camping chairs and a table, too. The latter is cleverly stowed away in the boot lid or sliding door. Setting up the table is easy: click, clack and you’re done! It couldn’t be simpler. Then all you need are plates, cutlery and glasses and you’re ready for your al fresco dinner experience. Add a beautiful sunset and it’s perfect!
